The Story Behind Bulila: A Journey Rooted in Craftsmanship and Gratitude

In June 2022, while exploring the narrow, cobbled streets of Istanbul, I found myself, as many do, captivated by the city's intricate and rich beauty. My best friend and I had wandered from one little shop to another, noticing a disheartening trend – so many homeware items were mass-produced, lacking the artistry and quality that once defined craftsmanship.

Now and then, we take a long weekend to immerse ourselves in a world rich with culture, beauty, and, of course, exceptional cuisine. It allows me to disconnect from the busyness of life and reconnect with something deeper. On this particular trip, as we roamed the historic streets of Istanbul, I began to feel the layers of daily life – work, screens, earbuds constantly separating me from the world – start to peel away. In their place, long-forgotten memories surfaced.

One in particular stood out – my first art lesson as a child. I vividly remember the sheer wonder of being able to create something with my own hands. The feeling of shaping materials into beauty was a privilege I never took for granted, and that sense of awe remained with me through the years.

I was privileged to study art throughout my school years, specialising in ceramics during high school. Art and creativity have always been central to my life, even as I transitioned into adulthood. As a single mother, I tried to infuse our home with beauty and calm, creating spaces in our home and garden that nurtured the soul. A memorable garden tour to Provence inspired me to transform our swimming pool into a Mediterranean/French courtyard, complete with olive, lemon and lime trees surrounding a serene fountain. Some of the materials had to be sourced from distant places, but I remained determined, piece by piece, to create a sanctuary.

It was this creative spirit that reawakened as I strolled through the streets of Istanbul. I knew I needed to return to a life driven by creativity – and, more importantly, to share that joy with others. While I wasn’t sure exactly how this idea would manifest, I was excited by the seed that had been planted.

Six months later, in December 2022, I travelled to Oman to meet family at the sumptuous Al Bustan Palace Hotel. We snorkelled through the reefs of the Daymaniyat Islands teeming with vibrantly coloured corals, fish and feeding turtles and later journeyed up to the rugged, awe-inspiring peaks of the Jebel Akhdar mountains. Standing there, high above the world, I was overwhelmed by the raw beauty of nature. It was here, overlooking these majestic mountains, that Bulila was born.

The name itself is a tribute to two places that reignited my passion – Bul, for Istanbul, and Lila, inspired by Alila Jabal Akhdar. The fusion of all my experiences, different cultures and inspirations gave birth to something truly special for me. The journey to bring Bulila to life wasn’t a simple one. It involved travelling thousands of miles, masses of red tape and unexpected delays, and countless hours spent building relationships and curating products that reflect the same level of craftsmanship and authenticity I cherish.

Along the way, I encountered artisans who share my passion for quality and creativity, many of whom I now consider my guiding lights. They welcomed me into their world, sharing their craft and stories, and for that, I am eternally grateful and will share those stories with you. As we grow our product ranges, I look forward to sharing artisans' work across the globe.

To everyone who believed in me and supports this journey – thank you. Whether by offering friendship, guidance or simply being by my side, you have all played an integral role in bringing Bulila to life. A special thank you to El, Kaan, Erhan, Nyajok, Maryan, Mustafa, Esme, Eisha, Vefa, Affan, Bilal, Onur, Emre, my dear family and friends.

We want Bulila to be more than a brand. We hope to make you part of our community that celebrates artistry, culture and the loveliness of handmade craftsmanship. It’s about reconnecting with what truly matters in our world and sharing that joy with those who appreciate the finer things and slower pace in life.

Welcome to the world of Bulila, where every piece tells a story, and each creation is a testament to the passion behind it.
