LIMITED-SERIES VINTAGE SUZANI / LINEN CUSHIONS

For centuries across Central Asia, Suzanis were created as part of a young woman's dowry. These remarkable embroidered textiles accompanied her into marriage and were intended to demonstrate not only the skill of the bride and her family, but also their hopes for prosperity, happiness, fertility and a successful future.

The word Suzani comes from the Persian word suzan, meaning "needle", a fitting description for textiles that often required years of painstaking work. Mothers, grandmothers, aunts and sisters frequently worked together to create them, making each piece both a work of art and a deeply personal family heirloom.

The process often began with silk. Families raised silkworms, harvested the cocoons and spun the silk into thread. Cotton was also cultivated, and these materials were woven into cloth, which provided the foundation for the embroidery. Natural dyes were extracted from plants, roots, fruits and insects found within the local landscape. Madder root produced rich reds, pomegranate rind created warm yellows, indigo yielded deep blues, while cochineal insects were sometimes used to create vivid crimson tones.

Once the cloth had been woven and the threads dyed, the embroidery began. The motifs carried layers of meaning. Pomegranates symbolised fertility, abundance and prosperity. Tulips represented beauty and renewal. Carnations were associated with happiness and celebration. Vines and flowering branches reflected growth and continuity, while circular sun-like medallions symbolised protection, energy and life. Each region developed its own distinctive patterns, colours and interpretations, making every Suzani unique.

The vintage Suzanis used by Bulila were created within this tradition. By pairing these historic textiles with contemporary European linen, the collection seeks to honour their origins while bringing them into a modern context. The result is a dialogue between past and present — preserving the artistry, symbolism and craftsmanship of the original embroidery while creating pieces suited to today's interiors.

Each cushion therefore carries more than colour and pattern. It carries the work of many hands, the knowledge of generations of women, and a tradition that has endured across centuries.
