Rubén Fabuel

Toledo, Spain

Born in Madrid, Rubén Fabuel is a fourth-generation woodworker whose work brings together heritage, patience and visual drama.

His journey into straw marquetry began in 2017 after discovering an Art Deco marquetry piece at an antique fair. Captivated by the material's natural luminosity, he spent two years searching for the right training before studying at the Homo Faber School of Crafts in Mansilla de las Mulas, Spain. He later continued his training in Paris at the renowned atelier of Lison de Caunes.

Rubén launched his first marquetry pieces in 2020 and has since exhibited his work at fairs and exhibitions across Spain. He draws inspiration from his travels - Parisian lampposts, antique textiles, classical architecture, old doors and the visual details he photographs during his travels.

His primary materials are wood and rye straw, finished with natural beeswax. The rye straw is grown in Torrijos, Toledo, and prepared by hand through a slow process of harvesting, cleaning and dyeing. This allows Rubén to retain close control over both quality and environmental impact.

Working from his own designs, as well as on commissions for decorators, designers and private clients, Rubén creates pieces that are refined, distinctive and full of natural glow. His work has been featured in specialist design media, including Nuevo Estilo Collection, HOLA Living and YoDona, as well as on television and radio.

In recognition of his work, he received the PRENAMO National Award for Business Excellence in Fine Arts from ANDE, the National Association of Young and Emerging Designers.

At the heart of Rubén’s work is a simple intention: to bring beauty, warmth and emotion into interior spaces through the quiet radiance of handcrafted straw marquetry.
